I wrote Ave Maria in 2008 for the Canadian Chamber Choir Composition Competition. It almost didn’t come to be – after many days of nothing feeling quite right for my entry, I was ready to move on to something else. With not long left until the deadline, I woke from a dream in which I floated above a long line of pilgrims walking along a country road, singing together. Their voices grew as they approached, joining together in supplication, fading into the distance as they passed without breaking stride or song. This piece was the result on waking, which I managed to score and submit with 2.5 hours to go before the deadline.
